What Is Local SEO — and Why Does It Matter for Small Businesses?
You might have heard the term 'SEO' thrown around a lot. But what does it actually mean — and more importantly, what does it mean for a small business in Wales trying to get found by local customers? Let's break it down simply.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It's the process of making your website more likely to appear when someone searches for something on Google. The higher up you appear, the more visitors you get — and the more enquiries come your way.
What makes local SEO different?
Local SEO focuses specifically on searches that include a location — like 'dog groomer Llanelli' or 'web designer Carmarthenshire'. It's also what determines whether your business appears in the map results (the three listings that appear at the top of Google with star ratings and a map). For most small businesses, local SEO is far more valuable than trying to rank nationally.
The most important things you can do
- Set up a Google Business Profile — this is the single biggest thing you can do for free
- Make sure your business name, address and phone number are consistent everywhere online
- Get Google reviews from happy customers — Google rewards businesses with genuine reviews
- Have a website with your location mentioned naturally in the content
- Get listed on local directories like Yell, FreeIndex and Bark
How long does it take to work?
Local SEO is not instant — it typically takes 3–6 months to see meaningful results. But unlike paid advertising, the effects are lasting. Once you're ranking well for local searches, you keep getting traffic without paying for every click.
Do I need to pay someone for SEO?
Not necessarily — especially at the start. The basics (Google Business Profile, consistent listings, getting reviews) you can do yourself for free. A well-built website with your location baked in does a lot of the heavy lifting. At Twin Star Digital, every website is built with local SEO in mind from day one, so you're not starting from scratch.
